Patanatomia del cuore
PreludioPrelude
It is difficult to explain what a Pataphysician's heart is made of and how it works. This treatise of scientific standing, thanks to the many illustrious signatures that compose it, will attempt to suggest a path and, as is fitting, lay bare the cardiac muscle that has, since ancient times, fuelled the debate over whether it is or isn't the true seat of the soul and the emotions, or whether that primacy belongs instead to its worst enemy, the brain. MIND you. Bear in mind, too, that the thaumaturgic power of this compendium is already well established: it was born of the wish to soothe, through the noble art of distraction, the heart of Our Serene Tania Sofia Lorandi, Provveditrice Rogatrice Generale of the Collage de 'Pataphysique, which in the summer of 2019 (common era) was struggling to function. After a passionate reading before the public gathered at the Fondazione Il Bisonte, on the occasion of the 148th Pataphysical New Year of the Pataphysical Era organised in Florence by the Lettere S.com.Poste of the Serene Duccio Scheggi, Our Guide's heart resumed beating with the precision of a watch observed, as is proper, in profile.

FORMA. When we think of the heart, the first image our brain suggests is the classic red glyph that stands for love and blood. Yet, as Doctor Faustroll, our Immovable Curator, put it: "Universal agreement is itself a miraculous and incomprehensible prejudice" — from which I deduce that the shape of the heart, for a pataphysician, changes according to one's personal point of view, not according to mere usefulness. The pataphysician loves form and content, or better still, loves every representation of them, and above all their exceptions. Here are a few imaginary solutions that have always stood for the heart: sun, vulva, eye, ivy, seat of Brahma, throne of God, dwelling of the soul, centre of the emotions, sacrificial organ, gift, ex-voto, cave, centre, fist, memory, matter+form, muddle, passion, love, pain, charity, game, fruit. And it is fittingly a piece of fruit that appears in the very first graphic depiction of the heart I found during my research into the organ: an illuminated letter inside the French romance Le Roman de la Poire, written around 1250 (common era), in which two lovers give each other their hearts in the shape of a pear that they peel together with their teeth (so as not to plagiarise Adam and Eve).
SEMINA. An honourable mention goes to the silphium plant, extinct for centuries, whose seed is said to be the origin of the stylised heart shape we all know. It seems this seed was used as a natural contraceptive — a reminder, perhaps, that besides the heart and the brain there's a third organ to reckon with, one that often influences the other two; I leave it to the reader to guess which…
